Aphex Twin’s tank

OK - not exactly a tank, it’s an armoured scout car but it definitely looks like one. Aphex Twin's weirdness has made him a wealthy man, and the Daimler Ferret Mark 3 was bought by Richard D James in 1995 for ‘money’ and other ‘things’ (drugs). He lived in London but stored the ‘tank’ at his parents house in Wales, parked on their drive.

Speaking to Details magazine in 1995 he says “My tank was made for the British army right after World War II. It's a big toy—larger than an ice cream truck, heavier than 9,500 pounds when combat-ready, with big fat wheels. And a gun. I like the Ferret not for its place in history, but for the place it occupies in my parents' backyard. (I moved from Cornwall to London and haven't sent for it yet.) When I lived in Cornwall, I'd drive it around town. It's easy to get carried away when you're raving down the thoroughfare in a steel-hulled tank. You become the colossus of roads. You don't even have to signal—people simply get right out of your way.”

RDJ is known for his outlandish lies and behaviour, having previously bought a bank to make a recording studio, and claiming he’s bought a submarine too. It’s unclear if the ‘tank’ is still in his possession.

Speaking to The Guardian in 2005, "Loads of countries have ex-military gear that they want rid of," he explains. "Missiles, rockets - you can get all that shit. You could probably buy a battleship if you had enough money." How much was the sub? "About £40,000. They're really cheap." Can it be submerged? "Of course. It's totally pukka. You could live in it. It hasn't got any torpedoes," he says, suddenly forlorn. Then he brightens. "I was thinking of getting these rockets for my tank. Side-mounting missiles. Just think: thousands of pounds for just one push of the button."

James’ reputation for weirdness precedes him. His alluring strangeness is reflected in his music videos, such as ‘come to daddy’, protraying children running around with his face CGI’d on top.

So, if you really think about it, a tank is reasonable and if anything completely normal behaviour from Aphex Twin.
