MF DOOM: reason behind death revealed.
Rapper MF DOOM, whos real name is Dumile Daniel Thompson, died on 31st October 2020 at St James Hospital in Leeds. After an inquest by the hospital, they found the rapper was given “substandard care”. Struggling with Kidney disease and hypertensive heart disease, DOOM had an allergic reaction, angioedema, to a prescribed drug, Ramipril.
He was then admitted to the ‘high observation unit’, but continued to decline in health. His wife, Jasmine Dumile, recalled how the rapper alerted her to his condition at the hospital. Mrs Dumile had to use another phone to inform the nurses of his worsening condition. She stated the buzzer was out of his reach, preventing him from alerting staff himself. Unfortunately, the swelling continued, and he suffered a fatal respiratory collapse.
The 49-year-old stayed in what Jasmine Dumile portrayed as a substandard hospital room with a bed and an old metal desk. “I don’t want to say it was an old storage room,” she told the inquest, but “it wasn’t set up.” During the inquest by the hospital, Chief medical officer Dr. Hamish McLure issued an apology on behalf of the hospital trust, “I would like to offer our sincere condolences to Daniel’s family, friends and fans at this difficult time. I apologize that the care he received was not to the standard we would expect,” and “We have put in place a number of actions and the wider learning from what happened is to be used as a teaching topic in a number of different clinical specialities. We also support the coroner’s recommendation for clearer national guidance and awareness in this area.”
The rapper, born in London but spending the majority of his time in the USA, is known for his wordplay, metal mask, and "supervillain" stage persona. He rose as a major artist within the underground hip-hop scene in the 2000s. First known as part of the group KMD, with their hit single “Peach Fuzz”, MF DOOM developed his signature style that changed the direction of hip hop. Later in the 1990s, he adopted the MF Doom persona and rarely made unmasked public appearances thereafter.
Most notably, Dumile worked with Madlib, who helped produce his breakthrough album “Madvillainy”, along with “Mm.. Food” in the early 2000s. Due to failures by St James' Hospital in Leeds, we lost one of the most influential figures in hip hop of our time.
Rest in peace, MF DOOM.
